Attorney Description:

In his 40 year legal career, Russell Simpson (Russ) has worked in almost all areas of taxation including income tax, estate, gift and generation-skipping tax, Georgia income tax and local ad valorem (property) tax. Additionally, he has extensive experience with charitable entity formation, operation and taxation (or, even better, the lack thereof). Along the way, he has dealt with most types of business entities including creation, selection of tax status, transfers of interests and dissolution. He has testified as a tax law expert witness in various controversies or cases.
Russ graduated the University of Georgia School of Law, cum laude, in 1984, after having graduated the University of Georgia School of Business with a degree in accounting, summa cum laude, in 1981. While at UGA, Russ was a member of various scholastic honor societies. Though he passed the CPA examination, Russ chose to practice as a tax lawyer rather than as a tax CPA.
Today, his law practice primarily is focused on affluent clients and concentrated in the areas of estate and trust planning, taxation and administration and ancillary matters such as pre-nuptial (and post-nuptial) agreements, family business succession planning, IRA conversion and distribution planning, and charitable income and estate tax planning.
Russ is a member of the State Bar of Georgia (Fiduciary Law Section) and the Savannah Bar Association. He is a past president of the Savannah Estate Planning Council and a past officer and director of numerous civic organizations such as Rotary and Kiwanis.
He especially is pleased and honored to be the president of The Savannah Community Foundation, Inc. [www.savfoundation.org], a public charity with assets in excess of $100,000,000, which, through the generosity of its patrons, now makes grants averaging over $5,000,000 per year.
